Marmaduke Wright

Deadmans Cay/ Buckley & Mortimers

D-49 (200 acres), D-78 (120 acres)

Marmaduke Wright. Origin: Old Family Name.

A number of people with the surname Wright were enumerated in Nassau in the 1731 and 1740 Censuses. Marmaduke Wright was granted both a 200-acre parcel in the Deadman’s Cay area of Long Island, as well as one of 120 acres in the Mortimer’s area. Marmaduke and wife Mary had son Alexander, born 17 November 1786 on Long Island in the Bahamas. On 25 January 1797, he was appointed ensign to a company of militia on Long Island.

On 13 January 1808, a reward was advertised in the Bahamas Gazette for the return of the negro boy named John or Jack who formerly belonged to the estate of “Mr. Wright of Long Island” where he was born, so we can surmise that Wright actually lived on Long Island.
